Summer Camp 2011

Summer Camp (5 days)   Saturday 30 July - Wednesday 3 August 2011
Venue:   Bicton College, East Budleigh, Budleigh Salterton, Devon EX9 7BY.

Bicton College

Bicton College, Devon
Bicton College offers a beautiful location, with fun outdoor activities after class on offer.  It is an opportunity to combine a holiday with learning to cue and provides a chance to make new friends who also have an interest in cueing.  Costs are kept low, and families who are financially stretched can request reduced-price or free tuition. There is the option to travel in daily, or to stay on-site.  Single, twin and larger rooms, suitable for families, are available with shared facilities, and a few tent pitches are offered.

The Summer Camp Courses on offer:

Foundation - no knowledge is needed beforehand.
Improvers - to improve fluency and accuracy; you can also prepare for the level one exam in Cued Speech Proficiency.
Advanced - to reach higher levels of fluency and the opportunity to prepare for the level two exam.
English for French Cuers - designed for those who cue accurately in French and who wish to learn the additional cues for the English language.  The course requires a reasonable understanding of English to get the best from the course.
Children/Young People’s Course - is a fun and activity-based course for deaf and hearing children aged 7 yrs and above, including teenagers, who have an interest in learning to cue.  The class will be delivered through English and BSL to cater for all students.

Exams - Level 1 and Level 2 in the Proficiency of Cued Speech may also be offered.

Why come to Summer Camp?
Learning Cued Speech changes lives.  Deaf babies and children can understand English completely - even if they can’t hear it - through Cued Speech.  It is a unique way of making English fully accessible to a deaf person through vision alone and can be learnt in only about 20 hours.  Complete beginners can leave our Summer Camp with the ability to cue any word in the English language - although slowly!  Speed will come with use.

Whilst you learn, your young children will enjoy fun activities.  In the crèche they will be looked after by fully trained childcare workers with Cued Speech and BSL skills.  For the older children there is a Children’s Course especially designed to give a blend of learning to cue mixed with fun indoor and outdoor activities.

After day-time classes there will be a number of activities on offer for everyone which will include canoeing and kayaking on the lake, a climbing tower, archery and walks around the attractive grounds, and, for younger children, there is an on-site Animal Centre housing, amongst other animals, spiders, snakes and lemurs and there is also a Farm.

A visiting tutor from America, who is a Cued Speech Transliterator trainer and Cued Speech tutor, will be taking classes throughout the 5 day Summer Camp.  He is an inspiring and very knowledgeable trainer - not to be missed.

Also new will be sessions on family communication delivered by the cochlear implant charity, The Ear Foundation.

Bicton College is a short drive from the South Coast with its selection of beautiful beaches and towering cliffs and near to the coastal towns of Exmouth and Sidmouth with bus and rail links from Exeter.  The regional capital and university city of Exeter is only twenty minutes away.  For transport advice contact the CSAUK.

Students who attended the last Summer Camp commented:

“All the staff and activities were excellent; our older hearing son is hearing and  benefited enormously from the opportunity to mix with deaf children and adults.”
“It was made fun and you didn’t feel silly if you got it wrong.”
“Got a very good grounding in the whole system, now feel confident to go off and  do it on my own.”
