How to use Cued Speech

There are many different ways to use Cued Speech.

For example it can be used with different groups of babies, children, and adults:

  • to give deaf  babies full access to the spoken language of a hearing home
  • with school-age deaf children to give access to English within a classroom
  • with sign language-using older children and adults to improve understanding of spoken language
  • with hearing children who have speech and language difficulties.

It can also be used for different reasons, for example:

  • to support listening and speaking
  • to access the ‘spoken’ language half of Sign Bilingualism
  • as a remedial language tool
  • as a literacy tool.

This section refers to using Cued Speech to access English but it can be used both at home and at school to give access to any spoken language.
