Summer Camp 2012

Summer Camp 2012.  *Monday 30th July - Friday 3rd August
(*date & venue provisional but we expect to confirm details very shortly)

Venue:   Bicton College, East Budleigh, Devon EX9 7BY.

Bicton College

Bicton College offers a beautiful location, and our Summer Camp is an opportunity to combine a holiday with learning to cue. Costs are kept low, and families who are financially stretched can request reduced-price or free tuition.

Courses on offer will include:

Foundation - no knowledge is needed beforehand.

Improvers - to improve fluency and accuracy; you can also prepare for the level one exam in Cued Speech proficiency.

Advanced - to reach higher levels of fluency and the opportunity to prepare for the level two exam.

English Cued Speech for French Cuers - designed for those who cue accurately in French and who wish to learn the additional cues for the English language.  The course requires a working understanding of English.  Please note this course is not designed to teach English through Cued Speech to people who don't know English. (Monday and Tuesday focused course, followed by 3 days integrated into one of the above courses).

French Cued Speech (LPC) for French Cuers - 2 days (Wednesday & Thursday).  Suitable for those who cue accurately in English and who wish to learn the additional cues for the French version of Cued Speech, LPC.  Requires a basic knowledge of French.  (Students on this course can attend the Advanced Course on the other 3 days of Summer Camp if they wish to attend for 5 days).

Children/Young People’s Course - is a fun and activity-based course for deaf and hearing children aged 7 yrs and above, including teenagers, who have an interest in cueing or learning to cue. The class will be delivered through English and BSL.

Day-time Crèche - For babies up to aged 6 yrs, which includes an organised programme of fun activities and free play time for all.

Why come to Summer Camp?

Learning Cued Speech changes lives.  Deaf babies and children can understand English completely - even if they can’t hear it - through Cued Speech.  It is a unique way of making English fully accessible to a deaf person through vision alone and can be learnt in only about 20 hours.  Complete beginners can leave our Summer Camp with the ability to cue any word in the English language - although slowly!  Speed will come with use.

Whilst you learn, your young children will enjoy fun activities.  In the crèche they will be looked after by fully trained childcare workers with Cued Speech and BSL skills.  For the older children there is a Children’s Course especially designed to give a blend of learning to cue mixed with fun indoor and outdoor activities.

After day-time classes there will be a number of activities on offer which will include canoeing and kayaking on the lake, a climbing tower, archery and walks around the attractive grounds. For younger children, there is a farm to visit and an on-site Animal Centre.
